1. What inspired you
to write this book? I’ve been
writing since I was in grammar school, but it was after a health scare, I
realized life is too short to wait for “tomorrow.” Tomorrow is not
guaranteed, so I decided to publish how I cope with my demons.
2.
What exactly is it about and who is it written for? It’s about my survival from a
tumultuous environment growing up. Writing was one of my outlets while growing
up. It’s written for anyone who can relate and realize they are not alone, and
you are strong enough to keep going.
3. What do
you hope readers will get out of reading your book? They are not alone.
4. How did
you decide on your book’s title and cover design? The book is my soul. The cover design reflects my tormented
soul. It’s my daily struggle and where I feel most safe. The shadows in the
moonlight.
5. What
advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers – other than
run!? Believe in yourself. If you have
a message or a great story to tell, whether it’s dark or joyful, share it. You
never know who you might help, inspire, or comfort with your words.
6. What
trends in the book world do you see — and where do you think the book
publishing industry is heading? The
publishing world in 2024 is really exciting! We’re seeing a mix of
technological innovation, a strong push for diversity and sustainability, and
the growing impact of social media and new business models. These trends are
shaping a dynamic and vibrant landscape for both authors and publishers.
Individuals being able to share their work on their terms and through a variety
of platforms versus having to meet deadlines due to a contract. Creativity is
an inspiration and not something one can call on demand.
7. Were
there experiences in your personal life or career that came in handy when
writing this book? My writing is all
personal experiences. t’s my way of making sense of the chaos and keeping my
sanity in this crazy world. As I always put it, shit in my head that needs to
come out. There are scars you can see and those you cannot which never heal the
mind just repress them until they are triggered. The mind races an outlet is
needed and writing is one of those coping tools for me.
8. How would
you describe your writing style? Which writers or books is your writing similar
to? I’m not sure. I’ve really never
given much thought into what my writing style is. I just ask myself if what I
write is authentic. If it feels right, then I go with it. Otherwise, that stays
in the released chaos stack.
9. What
challenges did you overcome in the writing of this book? The biggest challenge was going through notebooks,
scrap paper, and phone of my works and selecting which writings were in good
shape to include and share.
10. If
people can buy or read one book this week or month, why should it be yours? If you want an empowering collection of raw,
powerful, and haunting poetry this book is for you. This work takes the reader
through a journey of survival from life’s nightmares, struggles, pain,
betrayal, and ultimately healing and growth. Grab a box of tissues and a stiff
drink, I’m told you’re going to need it.
About
The Author: Growing up in the
inner-city streets of Chicago, I found solace in writing, sketching, and
listening to music, which helped me escape the pain and sadness around me.
Despite the challenges, I graduated from both grammar and high school with
honors. While raising my daughters, I also completed my undergraduate degree
with honors and went on to earn three master’s degrees. Through it all, my
writing has been a constant source of sanity, helping me cope with life’s
hardships and the invisible scars they leave behind.
