1. What inspired you to write this book? My wife and I pondered in 1990 what to do
after retirement, and decided to teach English since that was the subject I was
most interested in and scored the highest during my primary school years.

2. What exactly is it about and who
is it written for?
Through 31 years of analysis of English words
and the synthesis of their similarities, the book,
LEEK English Pronunciation Method, was published
in 2022.  It is for Chinese who want to learn English in the simplest and
easiest way, by being able to pronounce virtually any English words seen in
advertisements, news media, and product labels, etc.

3. What do you hope readers will get out
of reading your book?
Be able to pronounce virtually any English
words without memorization, but by using a method that can easily be
learned.

4. How did you decide on your book’s title and
cover design?
The title represents the content of the book
directly.  Leek is a kind of green scallion, the seeds of which are in a
globe that when wind blows hard, they will fly all over, even to the end of the
world.  It is hoped that when the book is translated to other languages,
people in other countries can use the identical method and learn English
pronunciation. The cover design is supposed to be beautifully simple and simply
beautiful without bells and whistles.

5. What advice or words of wisdom do you have
for fellow writers – other than run!?
I can relate only to pure hard work.  I
developed the pronunciation method from scratch, without having learned or
influenced by any other pronunciation method, which forced me to create
something unique.

6. What trends in the book world do you see —
and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?
I think artificial intelligence (AI) will take
over a lot of so-called creativity in writing books. The volume of new books
will be overwhelming that their values will diminish, and to stand out apart
from others will be even more challenging.

7. Were there experiences in your
personal life or career that came in handy when writing this book?
I was not born smart, so all my life’s
accomplishments are through hard work.

8. How would you describe your writing style?
Which writers or books is your writing similar to?
The book is actually a copy of all the
class-room teaching material projected on the screen. I don’t know if there are
other books like mine.

9. What challenges did you overcome in the
writing of this book?
I put all English words that I knew and those
I should know in an Excel file, separated the words with similarities into
groups, combined small groups into bigger groups, and ultimately two parts
emerged: two vowel arrangements, “consonant, vowel, consonant, E”
plus “double-vowel”; and two consonant arrangements, prefixes and
suffixes.  Then, the basic pronunciation method became the first
part.  The challenge is it took a very long time to collect, analyze and
synthesize.

10. If people can buy or read one book this
week or month, why should it be yours?
Only people who know little English, but want
to learn English from the very foundation up would benefit from reading my
book.
